Jamie Cullum @ the State Theatre, Sydney - 10 Apr 06
the beautiful state theatre as i walked in...
Jamie rocks... Jamie C rocks... Jamie Cullum absolutely RAWKS!!!!!! oh my goodness... have i said it already? JAMIE is phenomenal man... this puny bloke from UK is an absolute musical genius... AWESOME... Even though i've heard his albums countless times, watched DVDs of this live performances... today i've seen and heard him for myself... this awesome guy ABSOLUTELY ABSOLUTELY RAAWWWKKKSSS!!!!
Ok fine... u get my point hehehe... sorry for my limited vocab.. but this guy's really damn blardy good la... u have to watch him... you just HAVE to (i think he's performing in Spore in June... PLEASE go and watch... you'll be doing yourself a massive favour ;P) I found out about his performance really late... like just a week ago... and i literally HOPPED off my seat in sheer exhiliration... immediately emailed my friends to ask if they wanted to go. I agonised for another 30 seconds max and that's it... i went to buy my ticket... i didnt even care if my friends wanted to go or not... I'M GOING! not about to miss this for the world...hahaha... well turns out there were only single seats left so i didnt have much of a choice ;P
jamie wielding his magic...
And i sure wasnt disappointed! U know what's the best thing abt a live performance... u can see and hear for yourself how the music is pieced together... marvel at the arrangement... hear the blending of the different sounds, witness the creative process... the intoxicating rhythm that just sweeps you away... and how it changes, twists and drives u absolutely crazy in a fantabulous way... and u know it is live cos the songs are those u hear on the albums yet it is different... there's a different edge to it... and i bet everytime he plays... there will be a unique variation and that for me is the mark of creativity, the gift of a true musician... man and until i watched Jamie C... i had NO idea he had a zhnged grand piano... seriously... there's this funky sound box hooked up to the grand... and he could modify the piano sounds... from the warm rich melodic tones to one that is crisp and sharp... even the wonky tonk of the digi-piano sound or the boom blast hybrid sounds that he used in a funked up song... and this was hooked up to a natural instrument... not an electronic one (ok fine... i'm sure some electronic devices had to be installed to it but in essense... it is the huge 2 metre grand piano thing... and the sounds originate from the resonating wood and steel strings of this gorgeous creation ;P and not bits and bytes of an electronic sound) and if u have ever watched or read abt JC... this guy doesnt just play the piano... he dances and plays... jumps on the piano... sometimes he uses his foot or cute booty to play the piano haha... the piano is also a percussion instrument to him... sometimes he plays it like a harp... its amazing... u just have to see him for yourself...
i got this off youtube... Jamie C live in cleveland...
He may not be the best pianist/guitarist/vocalist/songwriter/whatever but it's that unique blend of spunk, creativity, spontaneity and passion that makes him a class of his own... and the one thing that draws me to his music... is that his expressions through music are very real, genuine and unadultered... u can see it in his face, it is expressed through his body, his voice, his music... u can feel the broken-ness or take part in the exhiliration, drift into melancholy, taste the emotion so stark and at times so raw...i for one was swallowed whole ;P as i sat in the dark of the state theatre.... and he began wielding his musical wand... i was just taken... woven and spun into this tapestry that creeps into the depths of my heart, completely floored...
this is one of my fav songs - high and dry... pity this video didnt get to the best part of the song...
i normally leave lyrics to wrap up my blog entries... but this time i wont... cos words on a screen doesnt do him ANY justice... go buy a ticket to watch him... or buy his album: twentysomething or the lastest one catching tales... u know what.. the DVD is what u should totally get haha - Live at Blenheim Palace
(pls no buying pirate stuff k! Appreciate the creativity of an artiste, and pay for the enjoyment for what its worth... i'm sure u will not be disappointed!
